2009 NFL Mock Draft
by Shivy Pop - Apr 24, 2009 7:52 PM EST. Email him...
17. New York Jets - Freeman, Josh, QB Kansas State
Darelle Revis is really coming around as a dominan CB in the NFL, but there isn't anyone opposite him. Vontae Davis is inconsistent, but when he plays to his potential he can be dominant cover corner. New coach Rex Ryan will love having to not worry about the secondary, allowing him to focus on getting Vernon Gholston and his overpaid butt to play well.
18. Denver Broncos - Brown, Everette, DE Florida State
With the new 3-4 being implemented in Denver, the Broncos will need some edge rushers to get to the QB. Clay matthews is a great athlete who can do that very well. His experience in the 4-3 at USC will also contribute nicely to the Broncos defense in run support. He has an amazingly quick first step that makes him perfect ass an outside rusher in the broncos defense.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Jerry, Peria, DT Ole Miss
Now that the Bucs have signed Byron Leftwich, I don't think they will rush getting a QB in this draft. Leftwich will probably end up the starter for the season, and he is still young and has some untapped potential. With QB settled, Tampa will look to fill some glaring needs on Defense. Peria Jerry is an undersized DT that has a knack for rushing the passer from the interior. His skill set is perfect for the interior linemen in the Tampa 2 defense.
20. Detroit Lions - Maualuga, Rey, ILB USC
The Lions invested a bunch of money, hope, and time into Matt Stafford by taking him #1 overall, so it is necessary for them to protect this investment with an offensive lineman. Michael Oher is a solid OT who can play either LT or RT in my opinion. He is a nice value at #20 and will give the lions some options between him and Gosder Cherilus.
21. Philadelphia Eagles - Moreno, Knowshon, RB Georgia
I had the Eagles taking an OT here before, but with their recent trade to acquire Jason Peters from the Buffalo Bills, they have filled that need with a probowler. Philadelphia is in a nice position in this draft. They don't have any dire needs, but additions at RB, S, DE, and WR could be made. In the first round, I believe the Eagles will take Beanie Wells, giving them the power running complement to Brian Westbrook. If Wells proves to be able to stay healthy, he will eventually become Westbrook's replacement after he retires/moves on. Beanie is a powerful down hill runner with great size and surprising 4.4 speed. He has good instincts as a runner and has good enough agility to be shift at the 2nd level of tacklers.
22. Minnesota Vikings - Britt, Kenny, WR Rutgers
Minnesota doesn't have a red zone/ possession receiver on their team at all. Bernard Berrian is a deep threat and Sidney Rice is a threat to sit on the bench. Kenny Britt brings size and good hands to the Vikings offense, being able to go over the middle and make catches in traffic.
23. New England Patriots - Wells, Chris, RB Ohio State
If Knowshon Moreno is still available, I dont know how the Patriots could pass him up. Skills wise, Moreno is the most complete back, showing amazing ability as receiver, runner, and blocker. The Pats don't really have a legitimate feature back, so adding Moreno would instantly give them that. He is a smart player who can be effective with the Patriots, because they have so many other weapons that teams need to be conscious of.
24. Atlanta Falcons - Matthews, Clay, OLB USC
Hey Matt Ryan was damn good last season. Why not give him more weapons? Pettigrew is the most complete TE to come out in a while. He is a great pass catcher in traffic, but more importantly he is great in-line blocker. Pettigrew will prevent Matt Ryan from getting sacked by edge rushers, and make them pay when they are caught sleeping on defense.
25. Miami Dolphins - Davis, Vontae, CB Illinois
Aside from Will Allen, there isn't much talent and CB for the fins. The last time Miami had good corners, it was when Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison patrolled the secondary. Darius Butler is a playmaker who will help force turnovers and get the ball back in the hands of Ronny Brown and the wildcat offense.
26. Baltimore Ravens - Heyward-Bey, Darrius, WR Maryland
Bart Scott was lost in the off season, but Ray Lewis was resigned. Nonetheless, the Ravens need to add a linebacker to maintain the dominance of their defense. WR is a need area too, but Maualuga can have instant impact, and any WR taken at this point won't be the instant threat that Joe Flacco could utilize right away.
27. Indianapolis Colts - Nicks, Hakeem, WR North Carolina
DHB will need a year to "get it", but out of the slot this kid can be great in his first year. He has got size and speed, and under the tutelage of Peyton Manning, he can become and elite big play receiver in the league. A lot of people feel like Anthony Gonzalez has to be a slot receiver, but I think he can play on the outside. DHB with his size and speed coming out of the slot can be dangerous.
28. Buffalo Bills - Pettigrew, Brandon, TE Oklahoma State
This pick is the Buffalo Bills pick from the Jason Peters trade. Now that Peters has been traded, there is a hole at tackle on the O-line. Eben Britton can play on the left and right side, so if the Bills can get him here, this is almost a no-brainer.
29. New York Giants - English, Larry, DE Northern Illinois
The Giants are very very close to acquiring Braylon Edwards from the Browns, so I think they refrain from taking a wideout with their 1st round pick. They G-men probably need another DE, and a lot of teams seem to like Larry English a lot.
30. Tennessee Titans - Harvin, Percy, WR Florida
The titans need someone who can be a consistent sure-handed pass catcher. Hakeem Nicks is just that. He has great hands and legitimate size to go over the middle and make tough catches. With a consistent passing game, teams will not be able to bring 8 guys in the box against the titans. Chris Johnson and Lendale White's jobs will be made much easier, and as the Titans running game goes, so goes their offense.
31. Arizona Cardinals - Brown, Donald, RB Connecticut
Running back is a need area, but I think the cardinals really like Hightower but he is merely a goal-line guy. Donald Brown is a great pass catcher and has nice speed and running skills to complement any offense. If the Cardinals can hold on to Anquan Boldin, Donald Brown can be very effective in the backfield, giving the Cardinals a running game they lacked all season.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers - Butler, Darius, CB Connecticut
The steelers lost CB Bryant McFadden in the off season, so they will need a corner. They also could use some depth at safety next to Troy Polamalu. Sean Smith can play both CB and S. He is a big DB with greath length and ball skills. He doesn't have elite speed, but can still be effective because of his physicality.
Picks 1-16 | 17-32 | 33-48 | 49-64
