2009 NFL Mock Draft
by Scott Rogers - Apr 3, 2009 7:17 PM EST. Email him...
17. New York Jets - Maclin, Jeremy, WR Missouri
To make huge plays, the Jets have always relied on their passing game. But with the loss of Laveranues Coles, they have to rely solely on Jerricho Cotchery. They could use another option, now that Brett Favre isn't doing everything that they thought he would.
18. Denver Broncos - Laurinaitis, James, ILB Ohio State
The Bears have always been known for their aggressive defense. Last year, they used the draft to make a more aggressive offense by drafting Matt Forte, and it was a complete success. But they can not get excited and go for the offensive upgrade again this year, because Forte will still be there when they get back. But they need to focus on improving their defense, because there is no promise that it will just stay how it is.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Pettigrew, Brandon, TE Oklahoma State
The Buccaneers had a pretty good season in 2008. But they were still disappointed with their record. This is because while having lots of good players on offense, they could use some help on defense. Jerry is one of the players that they could use in 2009.
20. Detroit Lions - Britton, Eben, OT Arizona
I chose Matthew Stafford to go to the Lions at the number 1 pick. And for the Lions to have a productive season, they will need him to do a great job. So to help him out, they can draft Britton to protect him, because their offensive line is lacking.
21. Philadelphia Eagles - Sintim, Clint, OLB Virginia
The Eagles shined in the 2009 playoffs, and they could have gotten even further if they had a defense that was better at shutting down the offense. And with the loss of safety Brian Dawkins to free agency, they could use some key players to replace their star defensive player.
22. Minnesota Vikings - Freeman, Josh, QB Kansas State
The Vikings relied on their running game to get them to the playoffs in 2008, because they were without a quarterback. Now they're trying to get lucky with Sage Rosenfels, but he can't get the job done. They need a reliable leader who can excel other players performances.
23. New England Patriots - Moreno, Knowshon, RB Georgia
The Pats' rushing is lacking talent, and even though they have added veteran Fred Taylor, with the losses of scrambling QB Matt Cassel and Goal line back Lamont Jordan, they need some help. And Moreno is the type of hard working rusher that fits into their offensive scheme.
24. Atlanta Falcons - Cushing, Brian, OLB USC
The Falcons focused on improving their offense last year. And things have turned out pretty good, with Matt Ryan, Roddy White, and Michael Turner being at the top of the league. So they should work on some defense players if they want this years offseason to make an impact.
25. Miami Dolphins - Jerry, Peria, DT Ole Miss
With all of the Dolphins' reverses, wildcats, and deep passes, having a good pass and run blocker combined with a great receiving option, could boost their offensive talent and options.
26. Baltimore Ravens - Beckwith, Darry, ILB LSU
The Ravens have one of the most physical teams in the NFL, on both offense and defense. So a combination of strength and elusiveness in a single player could be used as a powerful weapon to keep the opponents guessing what is coming next.
27. Indianapolis Colts - Harvin, Percy, WR Florida
The Colts are known for a good passing game, and without long-time hero in Indianapolis Marvin Harrison, they can be left short handed. But with Harvin, they can increase options with the speed demon that he is.
28. Philadelphia Eagles - Maybin, Aaron, DE Penn State
The Eagles are able to make plays on defense, mainly with Brian Dawkins leading the secondary. But they do not make big game changing plays on defense. Maybin is one of the players in the draft that can do that.
29. New York Giants - Heyward-Bey, Darrius, WR Maryland
The Giants have explosive talent all over their defense. But they do not have any outstanding wideouts, after the loss of Plaxico Burress. Heyward-Bey is one of the top receivers in the draft class, and has great potential.
30. Tennessee Titans - Moore, D.J., CB Vanderbilt
The Titans need some clutch players to step in and save the team. Moore is the kind of player who can do that. He can make those much needed plays using his outstanding ability and atheleticism.
31. Arizona Cardinals - English, Larry, DE Northern Illinois
The playoffs are proof that when the Cardinals can stop the running game, they can win. Larry English is a player who can stop the run and make plays at the same time.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers - McCoy, LeSean, RB Pittsburgh
The Steelers are a hard hitting physical team, much demonstrated by the running back Willie Parker. McCoy could be a good matchup with Parker, to have both elements of the running game available.
